I grew up in the "never trust anyone over 30" era, and the people in charge right now are doing a terrible job, but if I have a toothache, I'm going to trust a dentist to fix it rather than my neighbor. I do give a bunch of cases when an expert is not to be trusted, but on the whole, experts are where knowledge is concentrated.
I was comfortable with everything you said until I got to this line:
"experts are the best bet for choosing reasoned beliefs."
I guess I have a lingering penchant to question authority.
